Developing an Effective Daily Oral Hygiene Routine
There are several important aspects to consider when developing an effective oral hygiene routine. This includes, the quality of the products you use, brushing, flossing and attending your twice-annual dental checkups.
Choosing quality oral hygiene products is very important. Make sure you look for oral hygiene products that have earned American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, for safety and effectiveness.
Brushing your teeth twice per day is essential for removing food particles and plaque from the surface of your teeth. The ADA recommends that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and abrasive toothpaste. A brand with added fluoride is also helpful for strengthening tooth enamel.
Once you are done brushing, you should floss between your teeth and into the gum line. You might want to choose a wax coated floss if you have a hard time working floss between your teeth. The waxy coating helps you work the floss into tight spaces without accidentally snapping the floss into your gums.
Once you are done flossing you can rinse your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Just keep in mind that antiseptic mouthwash cannot replace the effectiveness of floss.
Your regular dental checkup is critical for removing dangerous tartar and detecting early signs of tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer, before they can develop into something more serious.
