Types of Sedation Options Available at Our Lakewood Office

Thanks to sedation dentistry, patients can unwind and feel at ease throughout dental operations. Sedation dentistry is a specialty that seeks to provide a comfortable dental experience to those who experience dental anxiety or phobias. We offer various sedation options, depending on your level of dental anxiety. Our dentist, Dr. Dian Li, can also help you pick the best sedative that suits your pain threshold, tooth sensitivity, number of necessary dental treatments, and personal preference.

Belmar Smiles offers the following sedation options:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is a safe inhaled sedative and the one of the best options for mild dental anxiety. Before and during your dental procedure, you will breathe in this colorless and odorless gas through a mask or nosepiece. You will feel relaxed and possibly even joyful after the sedative takes effect.

Not only is nitrous oxide one of the safest sedative options we have, it is also effective and fast-acting, doesn’t interfere with other bodily processes, and goes away immediately following surgery. Laughing gas is the most recommended sedative for children.

IV Sedation

Intravenous (IV) Sedation, sometimes known as “twilight sedation,” allows you to have a dental procedure without any discomfort while still being somewhat awake and able to respond to our dentist. It lessens your awareness of what’s going on and removes any tension you may have. After the sedation wears off, you’ll return to your regular state without any after effects.

IV Sedation is directly administered into your bloodstream, making it the most potent kind of conscious sedation. Aside from patients with anxiety, this dental sedation will also help if you have a strong gag reflex, a fear of injections, multiple treatments scheduled, or complex procedures.
